Podcasting is becoming more and more competitive, right? People are finding it more difficult to stay in the game, so to speak. And those who are in, the majority of those who are in, seem to be struggling with different aspects of podcasting. But today I wanna share with you one great strategy to help you.
manage, navigate, work around this tough competition that everyone and their mother is giving us by starting a podcast. And I want to say before I say anything, remember that you have an edge, no matter how many people are in the podcasting space, you have an
edge with your podcaster because of your unique perspective. You are what make your podcast unique. so nobody can compete against you. Right? Now the way to double down on that uniqueness is to do what industry experts encourage you to
content creators to do and that is to niche down. Niche, find your niche. So today I want to talk about one aspect of finding your niche and that is defining your ideal audience, defining your podcast avatar. I have a free download called
50 questions that will help you define your ideal podcast avatar, your IPA. And what is your ideal podcast avatar? Is that one person you're talking to. You're not talking to everybody and you're not talking to a bunch of people. When you get it in your mind that only one person is listening to you and that person is your ideal
J. Rosemarie Francis (03:11.423)
audience, that person, that whether it's a mom, a working mom, a work at home mom, a stay at home mom, or it's you, the person who have a dream of starting a podcast. You may be a 60 plus woman with a
bunch of history, experience, wisdom, and you have your podcast or you want to start, but you suspect that you may be overwhelmed by how many podcasts there are, maybe even talking about what you're talking about, but so what? You're you, you're different. So one, I want to encourage you.
to keep going, but focus on who your ideal audience is. And don't forget to grab my free download. It's a great worksheet checklist that you can work through to get to that one person who is your ideal, your ideal person that you want your message to reach or you want to purchase your product or service or which person
you'll speak with and create that content to meet the needs of that person. I hope I'm explaining it right and I hope it makes sense to you. So in defining your ideal avatar, that one person, you determine how old are they? What are they doing right now with their life? What is their job? And what podcast
do they already listen to? And you could go even deeper by asking yourself, what keeps them up at night? What problems are they having? What are their fears? What are their dreams and what are their desires? And what are their biggest struggles? And what kind of transformation are they looking for?
J. Rosemarie Francis (05:35.681)
end results do they want in life that you feel that you could provide for them? So that's a loose way to define your ideal podcast avatar. Again, my free download will give you a framework for creating the avatar, for creating that one person, for creating
your ideal listener who you'll be able to create content for that meet his or her need. Make sense? I hope it makes sense. And this matters because when you know who you are speaking to, you never run out of episodes, right? You never run out of episode ideas. I spoke about it this...
on another episode because when you know who you're speaking to and what they are looking for, what interests them, what they're struggling with, then you know how to speak to that audience that will listen to you. You attract the right guests and even sponsors.
So I want to encourage you today that in doing this, don't try to get everybody to listen to your podcast because in the grand scheme of things, the download is not what you should be thriving for. At the beginning, a couple of years ago, everybody was striving for download because you're all going to have 10 million downloads and all that. But if you want to serve your avatar,
then you'll have to focus on their needs and the downloads will come, right? So you write better emails and social posts when you know who your avatar is because what you're writing will resonate with them, right? They will say, have a lot to do with me. This is just what I was looking for.
J. Rosemarie Francis (07:52.625)
You won't get people who look at your email and go, I don't even know why I'm getting this. Right. So you will be able to create more engaging content. You'll be able to create content that meet the need of your ideal listener. And then, you know,
By targeting one person, your message will reach a wide group of people who your message resonate with. Hope that makes sense. So if you haven't yet defined your niche, that's something to consider. But the first thing I would encourage you to do is define who your ideal podcast avatar is.
Who is it that you want to reach today? Who is that one person? Is it a divorced dad who is looking for that ideal relationship? Is it a teenage woman who may be a mom struggling to figure out how?
to raise children when she's already a child herself? Is it that person who's struggling with scammers and or debt or they want to find a better way to meal prep so they can save time? Is it that woman, mother who want to find how to get her picky eater to eat?
There are many ways, there are many ways you can go about defining who your ideal podcast avatar is. And I will also go further and say that even if you have other things around, once you choose an avatar, because humans are multi-dimensional, you'll find that if you decide to just...
J. Rosemarie Francis (10:12.589)
If it's a struggle for you to define that one person, be encouraged that because we are multi-dimensional, there'll be other needs for that one person that you'll be able to field based on what your podcast is talking about. I'll give you an example. if you are more, if you are,
your podcast targets single moms, a single working mother who is struggling with finding the perfect daycare or the perfect caregiver, you could talk about other things around that topic that will help and resonate with single moms. So you are not confined.
Determining who your ideal podcast avatar is doesn't confine you to anything. It just allows you to zero in on the need of your perfect listener. So I hope this helped you today. I'm J Rosemarie and I would be so encouraged if you could subscribe and follow me and follow this part.
and comment below what do you think of this idea that you are only speaking to one person on your podcast and don't forget to grab that free download 50 questions to help you define your ideal podcast avatar. Please subscribe so I could
be able to, so I can bring you more tips and strategies to start and grow your podcast. So that ideal person avatar is the person who will listen to you or listen to your podcast and will say, man, I needed to hear that. And if they can say that while they're listening to you, then you found your audience.
J. Rosemarie Francis (12:33.745)
So in defining, in doing the exercise and defining who the person is, you will want to visualize that individual. John Lee Dumas used to say his avatar was a gentleman who was going to work and maybe tired of the nine to five grind, but he had a family to support.
And this person would be listening to the podcast while driving to work in his truck because he has dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. so John Lee Dumas is the host of Entrepreneur on Fire and he has an amazing successful podcast, but he defined who he was talking to that one person, that gentleman, father, husband.
employee going to work with dreams of starting his own business or being an entrepreneur, but listening to that podcast and that podcast speaking to his dreams. So the person could have an age. When I did solo moms, when I was doing solo moms talk, I was looking at divorced moms between the age of 35 and 65.
because they were moms who had older children and adult children. And that actually was my target audience. So it was this mom who was frustrated, was overwhelmed because they had teenage children and they also had a life that they would have loved to live, but they've had to put their dream, she had to put her dream on hold.
because of raising these children because her husband was no longer in the picture. And so that was my avatar of a solo mom's talk. My avatar for Tools of the Podcast Trade, this podcast, is that individual, that one woman who is a working woman. She's a professional.
J. Rosemarie Francis (14:58.171)
but she has dreams of not just doing the daily grind. She would like to start a podcast to share her knowledge, her wisdom with other women her age. so these aspiring, you know, and another example, because that's not how I started, how I started at first my target audience was
